Bright spot lights flared into life, big groups of up to eight lights in each glared down at the sand covered arena. The intense heat of the lamps creating a heat haze around the steel coverings. The illumination set the scene quite nicely, or at least Takeshi thought so, it felt very much like a sports stadium, and to say he was excited for what was to come was an understatement. The Highguard private practice arena hadn’t seen any use in a few years, but a little spit shine had brought it back to good as new, the sand covered arena still offered a slippery surface for pilots who had to make sure they made use of their Zoid’s claws to keep a steady footing, and giant carved stones provided some light cover, the stone wall that ringed it was almost twenty metres high to ensure the safety of the small crowd who stood and sat in preparation, they’d paid a premium to be here and see the event. They were also protected by sheets of several feet thick bullet proof and blast proof glass.

Takeshi looked over it all with a smile from his private box, it was a small room that held a communications array to speak to both the crowd and the pilots alternately. Pressing the green button labelled “Crowd” Takeshi spoke into the raised microphone, “Good evening honoured guests and sports fans, Highguard welcomes you to our first spectated training session since the reformation, I hope you all enjoy yourselves and please help yourself to the hor d’ouvres and champagne the servers are bringing around, we thank you all for your patronage. Tonight you will see two of our newest recruits, rookies Aiyana Shuer and Alana Taylor, both were handpicked to join the team from the amateur tournament circuit.” He left his hand fall off the button and switched to the red one labelled “Pilots”.

“Alright rookies, this is your chance to see how you work as a team, and to see how you perform under the watchful eye of the adoring public.” He chuckled to himself as he remembered his first time fighting with a crowd watching on, “You’ll be going up against a pair of AI controlled Zoids, their movements will follow a pre-determined pattern that we’ve adjusted to suit your first attempt, as we gain an idea of where your skill level is the algorithm will increase its effectiveness.” With the flick of a switch a gate at the opposite end of the arena opened and out walked a tall, proud Lightning Saix and a black Liger Zero, Takeshi’s own Zoids.

“As you no doubt are aware the team doesn’t have any team Zoids yet, as such your first test will be against my partners, the Saix is called Flash and the Liger’s name is Thunder, neither are using any aftermarket parts, and watch out for Thunder’s tail, that is in fact a beam gun on the end. Best of luck to you both, make me proud.” The team Captain once more let off the talk button and switched to an arena wide channel to speak to both those gathered and the pilots.

“This arena is now a designated Zoid battlefield, battle code: 0099, area scanned, battlefield set up..” Takeshi relished each word as they dropped from his lips, “Ready?”

    Stats n Zoid:

Aiyana sat comfortably in the pilot's seat of her Command Wolf. Takeshi had talked Aiyana and Alana into a training session against two others, and they had taken the bait. The Command Wolf pilot had taken the offer to prove her skills in a more personal setting, as she felt the need to earn her keep with the team even though her primary skillset was with tinkering and science. Piloting came second for her, though being the test pilot for so many scientific theories in the past had given her enough practice to be good with the Zoid she was now in. Takeshi would announce it to the crowd before speaking to the two Highguardian pilots on a private line. They were going to be up against his two Zoids, though they would be on a preset AI pattern that would learn as they went. It would pose a challenge in the end if they did not deal with it swiftly, though it was just practice so there was no worry about permanent damage. If anything went wrong the battle could simply be called and no one would be hurt.

The ancient Zoidian would open a private line to Alana, so that she could talk to her throughout the battle once it started. "Hey Alana, this is Aiyana. I set up this private line for the battle and will keep it open so we can openly communicate for the fight that's about to happen. We are up against a Lightning Saix and a Liger Zero. Both can outrun and outmaneuver us in the end, so we need to make sure we take them down before they get too close. They both can deal a lot more damage once they're within melee range so I will focus on shooting them down from the word go. At the start, if you do not mind, you should fire that concealed weapon and try to take down the Liger Zero as soon as possible. It has the highest chance of taking us down, and if we focus fire we can get it out of the fight before both are on top of us." That was all the Command Wolf pilot would get out before Takeshi declared the fight started.

Sticking to what she had mentioned to Alana, the clawed girl fired her beam cannons at the body of the Liger Zero. The sound of the laser weapons resounded twice as she depressed the fire button two times as a surprise attack from the word "Fight!" At the same time the young woman would set the Nanotech Armor she had gotten applied to the Zoids armor to resist energy attacks. Both Zoids they were up against were stock Zoids, which meant a good portion of their attacks were focused around that specific type of damage. Not wanting to allow the Liger Zero to have a chance of getting too close, the Command Wolf pilot would aim another shot of the beam cannons at the body of the opposing Zoid before activating the smoke discharger that came with any Command Wolf on the planet. Black smoke came from vents on the hind legs of the Wolf Zoid even as she prepared to attack again.

The next shot of the Twin AZ 50mm Beam Cannons was aimed at the Zoid she had ignored attacking thus far, the Lightning Saix, and her attack was aimed at the body again. People spectating would probably wonder why her aim was focused primarily on the one area. The sad fact was that a Zoid could continue to function until you took out all of its legs, but if the armor that protected the Core of a Zoid was damaged enough the entire system would seize up and stall the Zoid in place. It was a safety measure to keep itself from dying permanently due to battle damage, and was not something that a pilot or scientist could alter. There were cases where it was more feasible to aim for the legs, or wings, of a Zoid but they were few and far between. Even with the Nanotech Armor currently on her Zoid the Command Wolf was easier to take down by focusing on the body alone. The only reason to aim for the legs was to reduce it's maneuverability, though that was silly to do if the opposing Zoid was already able to outmaneuver it. After the sound of the weapon cut through the air, the Command Wolf would leap to the side while moving head and legs inward to become a smaller target before landing. Ranged attacks would have a harder time striking, and a melee attack would sometimes find it's target missed as the Zoid's profile was smaller.

A leap backward would give the Zoid some space, or that was the intended results of the action, before Lightning Saix would find itself the target of another volley of the beam cannons. Not waiting to see if the first shot would strike, the female pilot would fire another volley at the same target before putting the Command Wolf into a charge forward to get to the other side of the practice arena. Her hopes were to get over there and start another round of fire while remaining at medium range from the two Zoids. With luck the two would split up as well, meaning that should she be forced into melee range that she would not have to worry about two attacking her at the same time. The woman hoped that Alana would be okay and not panic. Zoid battles were loud, fast, and dangerous. It was a practice battle, but panic made anything life threatening if you could not clear your head and think properly.

    Spoiler:

Alana felt so weird right now, not only because she was diving straight into a training session, but because it was going to be with someone she hasn’t worked with before. She wasn’t going to lie, she enjoyed the prospect of working with new people, but what do they think about her?? Alana wasn’t the type to work with others, this is probably because she was used to working on her own. However, she would hope that this would all change in due course, simply because Alana wanted to be with others, work with others and have a great time in whatever happens.

Letting out a heavy breath, Alana looked down to her zoid and smiled sweetly, it could probably never see her smile as much as she would see her grandfather's, considering she seen her grandfather smile the most than her trusty Gun Tiger would ever do so (considering her Gun Tiger has never even seen the relative in it’s lifespan) “You ready, buddy??” Alana would question the Gun Tiger as she petted the mechanical piece of machinery. She knew she still wasn’t that great with her zoid as much as she wanted to be, but she trusted her zoid with her life, especially since her and her zoid have been through much more than she wanted, nonetheless, it wasn’t time to think about it, it was time to think about the task on hand: the training session that she was paired up with Aiyana to do.

Takeshi would first speak, welcoming each and every guest that came to watch the duo have their practice fight and then spoke to the Alana and Aiyana, telling the girls that they were to go against his zoids. This did worry Alana slightly now that she thought about it, she didn’t think much of it earlier but now, it’s the real deal...It was going to be strange as hell.

Aiyana would speak to Alana through a private communication line, which was just perfect for the two leading ladies. It was ideal in order to keep the party running smooth n fine. “Heey! I understand completely Aiyana and I will take down the liger zoid as quick as possible along with you. Good luck to the both of us!” The black haired female stated before hearing Takeshi once more, loud and clear as his previous announcement was a good few minutes ago.

    The word fight was declared.

    It was time to go.

“Let’s get kicking some arse!” A feminine voice declared from her Gun Tiger as she allowed her Gun Tiger to activate its antenna array, she was hoping that this would work, especially since this was one of the commands that she has rarely used, nor has she ever felt the need to use it most of the time, but it was time to use it and it was time to get ready. That was when she decided to lower its head, revealing the very handy cannon it had. The cannon was probably the best thing about her zoid as of late. It was hidden so it was useful, and it was powerful considering the type of zoid her Gun Tiger was. “Aim for the legs of the Liger Zero, buddy!” Alana commanded to herself as she aimed for the Liger Zero. She had to remember the most important things while the cannon was revealed… aim for the weak spot, and make sure to keep the Gun Tiger still in order to use the cannon in the first place. “Concealed cannon is revealed!” She let Aiyana know, she didn’t know if Aiyana was too busy with the other two, so she let Aiyana know that it was revealed. “Firing for the legs! FIRE IN THE HOLE!” Alana declared as she released the beam of the cannon and went straight for the legs thanks to the girl’s careful aiming. She hoped this would at least falter the Liger Zero in one way or another.

Alana had to watch carefully while deciding what to do, she still wasn’t used to combat whatsoever, and even then she didn’t want to fail… not here, not now. She was in training for a reason, to test her skills to the max, find out what's making her falter as a Gun Tiger pilot and then just advance from there.

It seemed Aiyana was continuing to do everything, and Alana was determined to fire another one, but instead she ran around and watched cautiously, piloting a light zoid, it was really fast, but she had to take note since the other zoids would be much faster than hers.

Takeshi felt something akin to pain as he watched his two proud partners move with such sluggish, jerky motions. The A.I while revolutionary and great for team training exercises was not a smooth pilot and did not do the two powerhouses justice. The Captain watched in pained silence, trying to focus on the two rookie pilots over his growing apprehension over the damage that would be inflicted on the Zoids that were as much an extension of his being as his own right arm. He didn’t have to wait long, Aiyana bounded into action with all the grace and natural skill of a born pilot, Takeshi was left agape as the Command Wolf fired on the Liger Zero, only Thunder’s innate speed saved him from the worst of the cannon fire, as it was the 50mm’s did find their mark once, the shot ripping into the Liger’s body as he ran around the base of one of the large standing stones.

Alana was another matter entirely, one hesitant cannon shot that ended with an explosion of stone and sand as its target disappeared from view. The miss seemed to shake the pilot’s confidence and from there she did nothing more than run around the edge of the battlefield, while Aiyana went back onto the offensive. Takeshi quickly opened a channel to Alana, “Alana, are you alright?” He asked, paternal concern obvious in his voice, “Why aren’t you attacking?” He queried as his eyes watched the actions of Aiyana.

The Command Wolf proved too adept for the AI controlled Zoids, its cannons barked again and again, sending perfectly aimed fire into the robust bodies of the Liger and Saix. Thunder went down first as the cannon fire left smoking holes in his torso armour while the Saix; Flash, managed to stay ahead of the fire for most of the opening salvo, only one strike finding its mark, but it was enough to damage the lightly armour Zoid, causing it to limp into cover, only to be met on the other side by the Zoidian pilot, guns waiting to take down the foe.

Takeshi called the fight to an end as he realised the young pilot had outplayed the AI in an instant, the Captain smiled as the shutters on the guests’ viewing platform rolled down, the entertainment was over and they would be treated to more hors douvres and fine wine, while the pilot’s debriefed with their Captain. “Alright Rookies, you can disembark, I’ll meet you on the arena floor.” Takeshi informed them as he entered the lift that took him straight down, he exited from the arena wall and headed across to meet his newest recruits across the sand, his boots crunching along on the loose sand.

“Well, what’re your thoughts ladies?” He asked as he drew close.

Aiyana felt bad for the damage she caused to the poor Zoids stuck under the control of an AI meant for rookie pilots to deal with. The program could not adapt in time when it was taking damage that took it out nearly instantly. Once the woman had taken both down, not noticing the inaction of her battle partner due to her focus on her opponents at the time, she would hear Takeshi tell them to disembark. The young woman would pilot her Command Wolf to the edge of the arena nearest to the hangar before the Zoid crouched down to allow her egress. Once the woman landed she would do an instinctive dust off of herself before gently patting on the head of the Wolf Zoid beside her. "Good Job. I know it was a practice fight, but you did perfectly." The woman would reassure the Zoid with these words just as their Team Captain would reach them and ask for their thoughts.

"I am truly sorry about the damage I have done to your Zoids, Takeshi. I hope you can forgive me for it, as I would not be happy about the same happening to my Command Wolf." The woman would speak the words softly, apologetically, before moving on to her opinions on the AI. "The artificial intelligence did not seem prepared for ranged attacks at all. Seemed like it needed some kind of recognition program for incoming attacks so that it could do attempted dodges a little swifter. That and maybe have it upgrade itself a little faster in response to the pilots against it. I felt like it ignored me until it was too late, and even for a practice battle I felt like I was completely out of harm's way once the first shot landed." The words would simply pour out of her mouth, the woman thinking logically with it now that the emotional part was over with.

What would the group do now that the fight was over? Aiyana had expected the battle to last much longer than it did. Would they head to the gym? Grab a bite to eat? Maybe they would go for a walk and find something else to do? Maybe they would talk with Alana, see what had happened with her. Had she been too scared to do much else during the fight? Had she frozen? Now that the woman thought about it, she had not seen her do much during the fight after the word fight had rung out. They would likely find out soon enough. Teams were good for that, finding out what was wrong and working out the kinks to fix it up.

Booo… That didn’t go as planned… her cannon failed miserably and this made Alana panic quite a lot, if she was going to be honest. She didn’t know what to do now and it seemed that Aiyana was able to handle everything by herself… this sucked… she didn’t know what else to do either, Aiyana seemed to know everything and here was Alana, not able to do much… baaah. She wondered how she was going to be able to help the team if she was going to be this crap… ah well. Improvement was always necessary to be a good pilot, that was one of her aims while being a pilot and that was perfectly okay, as being successful is her main goal. The only way of being successful is working hard and practice well. Takeshi tried to find out what was going on, but all Alana could do was sigh and she reported back to her leader “Aiyana seems to have this covered!” She spoke back into the receiver. It was clear that the young woman was panicking, but she kept her cool under the pressure “If I try to release another shot, I might hurt her and her zoid!”

The words rang out clearly, it was time for the duo to disembark and that is what Alana done, she halted herself and let her Gun Tiger casually arrive at the hangar. She was disappointed she couldn’t do much, but she at least tried. “You did well man, even if I did fuck up quite a bit.” She praised. “I have a shit load to learn, but Highguard will help us, I am sure!” Finally, she hopped off her zoid after she let her zoid get settled into everything it needed to and then hopped off, being careful to not trip or something of the sort. Oh wow, her legs hurt! Maybe she could have a shower later… yeah, that's a good idea!

Walking over to Aiyana, the female allowed her feet to make clip clopping sounds as they played chasies with each other as she then looked to the female… she looked so darn amusing, it wasn’t how she looked, but her combat ability on a zoid was very impressive… maybe she should ask Aiyana to teach her? Or maybe Takeshi?? Well, whatever, she will find a way to get better somehow. No matter how long it will take, she will give it time.

Upon seeing Takeshi walk up to the duo, he asked what their thoughts were, Alana didn’t even want to answer… instead, she looked to the side, she didn’t even deserve to see Takeshi right now as she gave out her reply…

“My thoughts are shit and I done shit.” She admitted. “I panicked like a bitch. Bleehhh, I must admit though, Aiyana done well.”

Takeshi listened to each of the rookie pilots in turn, nodding as Aiyana gave her report on the AI and how she felt the battle went. The older pilot rubbed his neck as he waved away her apology, “Flash and Thunder are tough they can handle a little bit of a fight, but you’re right the AI didn’t react as well as I’d hoped, I think for your next exhibition match you’ll have to take on an actual pilot, that way we can see just how good you are and where your strengths and weaknesses may lie.” The Captain frowned, “You did well and the sponsors saw that so I imagine there’ll be a not insignificant bonus in your pay cheque this week, however from a team perspective I’d say this training match was a failure, we weren’t able to learn that much, and I’ll apologise for that, next time I’ll have a better test for you.”

He turned his attention on the flat and self-flagellating response of Alana, Takeshi gave her a reassuring smile and a quick squeeze on the shoulder in a comforting gesture, “Don’t be so hard on yourself, it’s going to take time and practice to reach your true potential, it’s why we do training like this, to help you on your way.” He chuckled a bit as old memories flooded back, “Back in my early days with the team we didn’t do a whole lot of this and we were mostly left to our own devices, I didn’t win a battle for at least six months after I joined Highguard, you’ll learn what it is like to stand victorious on the field of battle in good time I promise, just got to work hard and train as often and as much as possible.”

Takeshi turned to face them both, his arms crossed before him, his tone changed from the comforting voice of a teacher to the iron authority of a Captain, “See that your Zoids are stowed away carefully in the hangar and that they are seen to for any repairs necessary, then meet me outside the main gate, your fitness training starts now.” The smile that spread across the Captain’s face was not unkind, but there was no mistaking the challenge behind his eyes, the Blue Bolt prized fitness and physical conditioning as a trait of a successful pilot and now they would be tested in an arena where their Zoids could not help them.

The sigh of relief from Aiyana was quite genuine. She had been worried about injuring the Zoids beyond repair or messing up the bond between them and their pilot due to the way they were being used. He seemed to have high hopes for Aiyana, which she guessed was a good thing in her case and mentioned that the sponsors saw her pilot skills which meant she had people's knowledge of her piloting as well. While she could do without too much publicity, a little limelight was something she did not mind once in a while. The failure he talked about was true, from a team perspective it really had not done much. It had showcased her skills and her partner had panicked and did not do much even though she was upset with it after the fact. Takeshi would console her on the subject, using himself as the example as he had not won in six months upon joining Highguard initially. It was an excellent way of telling her she could improve, especially when the Captain of the team started out with a massive losing streak and had gone up from there!

After he went over the after-battle comments with the two woman, their captain would face them both and change his tone to a more commanding one as he spoke again; telling them to pilot their Zoids to the hangar and meet them outside for their now starting fitness training. It would not take long for Aiyana to climb back into her Command Wolf and lead it back to the spot in the hangar it rested in. A little bit of talk with it to sooth it would be done before she made her way out to meet Takeshi at the main gate for this 'fitness training.' Aiyana Shuer was not the most physically fit person. She was in decent shape, but if tried to get her to complete a marathon or something she would probably die in the process.
