    Character Description:

    Age: Mid-30's
    Gender: Male

    Physical Description:

At one point, the pilot known as Constantinus Lex was known for his cleanliness and absurd attention to detail, to his pristine dress uniform and his obsessive need for perfection in his appearance.  This, however, has changed since the fall of the HighGuard. His uniform, representative of stability and order, was lost soon after he took to the wastes in shame and remains as little more than tattered navy rags. Nowadays, Lex cares little for his appearance. His once perfectly clipped hair now hangs loose, his chiseled jawline sports a short beard and is marred by the occasional scar.

But some things never change.  Lex still cuts an intimidating profile, a tall and broad-shouldered man despite his increasing age.  He still wears a stony demeanor, a stern façade of discipline and mild scorn towards the world as a whole, albeit with a little more anger than before.

    Personality:

Lex is a very guarded person.  He’s gone through some traumatic events lately, but he remains a man of many faces.  His outer behavior very rarely matches his inner thoughts, as he’s learned that perhaps he should just keep to himself over time.  He puts up stern veneer of discipline and bravery while masking the fact that he’s basically an emotional train wreck.  His reputation that he built up for so long has faded along with all record of his military service, but perhaps that’s for the best.

Lex still holds himself accountable for the fall of his team, and perhaps it’s because of this that he has thrown himself headfirst into a one-man war with the bandits of the Unregulated Territories.  It was because of his actions, after all, that he lost his only comrades; his friends, his team, and even his trusted Double-Sworder. He's had some tough times lately, but deep down he's the same ol' Lex.  He's a nervous wreck with some destructive tendencies, a deep-seated need for approval, and a secret love of fruity drinks.

But despite all of this, lots of what makes up the core of his character remains. He's still a tightly-wound stickler for maintaining rules systems, a little obsessive over small details in life, and a consummate bureaucrat. With the return of Takeshi to the role of Highguard's captain, Lex is excited with the prospect of getting everything back in order (complete with all of the paperwork that would entail).

    2/3rd Ed. Backstory:
To fully understand Constantinus, like anyone else, one must truly understand the environment he was raised in. Born in a large city at the height of the Zenebean Empire, the war with Helic was at an all-time high. Generals were the equivalent of today's movie stars. Everyone knew their names and the only sure-fire way to be someone important was to carve your place into society through combat. The emperor, Zenebas, was a kind man. He was a loving father and a caring ruler, despite his extreme views on warfare. He believed that the winner of a fight was he who struck first, and if you struck first, you struck hardest. That was the way to keep an enemy down, the way to keep those you loved safe. Over the years, he's been demonized and made out to be something he wasn't, primarily through the actions of others claiming to act in Zenebean favor, such as the Neo-Zenebean movement or the Backdraft group. That wasn't the man that his people knew him as, that wasn't the Zenebas that his men were willing to fight and die for. The Zenebean Empire fed their soldiers, they cared for their own, and if there were some dissidents and extremists involved, they certainly didn't represent the nation as a whole.

Constantinus Lex was born to a soldier father and a writer mother. His father was distant emotionally, but always looking over his son's shoulder. His mother was a kind and passionate woman, a bit of a spitfire in private but the face of a suburban housewife to guests. She never claimed to be more than a housewife, but she was the real leader of the house. Maybe it was because of this that Lex's father felt the need to over-exert himself in his son's life and dedicate his life to molding his oh-so-perfect son. The man always expected the most from him, the oldest of three siblings. He made sure that the boy played sports, kept his grades up, and was sent off to a private military college as soon as he was able. He loved his son the more he grew to fill his mental image of his perfect progeny, and the boy hated him every moment of it.

Despite living in the shadow of one he reviled, the boy loved his years in the Zenebean Academy. He coasted through on his family's name, while doing little to better it. He played ball with his friends, cheated his way through his classes, and developed a bad habit for boastfulness that would follow him for the rest of his military life. He whored himself out (figuratively) to his commanding officers and instructors while building a reputation as daddy's perfect little soldier. Because of his exceptional grasp for doing nothing in particular, he was awarded a position of Disciplinary Officer in some wayward artillery unit in the later days of the war. His penchant for playing the hero and his equally bad planning led him into battle after battle, where he often survived due to a combination of dumb luck and the brave actions of those he served alongside. Throughout his career he wore a big grin and was always an icon to his men, a soldier of the highest caliber and valor as his knees knocked together and he swore under his breath.

He tried so hard to be brave and courageous, he pretended to be the great soldier that sometimes, through sheer luck or simple probability, it legitimately happened. He rose through the ranks quickly (primarily due to family connections and a famous name), but over time began to be known as a hero amongst his men. The myth of the great commander spread, seemingly out of spite for its creator, and won Lex a lifetime of experiencing the joys of constant battle and desperately avoiding death. His biggest break happened in an instant as his world imploded at the end of the Zenebas-Guylos war, he received a summons containing his new orders.. a remote testing facility in the middle of nowhere. Seeking peace and quiet far from the front lines, the young pilot sought refuge wherever it was offered and promptly fell victim to the last trick of the then-gone empire.. as they sought him not for his military credentials or his "merits", but because he had the right last name. Seeking to preserve their influence into the future, they cryogenically preserved the progeny of their oldest and most influential nobles to ensure the second coming of the Zenebas Empire.. which they promptly missed out on and slumbered forevermore.

    Sample Role Play:

    3rd Ed. Sample RP:
"You'll be up and about in a few minutes. It'll be just like taking a nap.." a gray haired woman in a lab coat announced from a podium to the eclectic gathering of test subjects standing below. "Primary findings were.. less than ideal, but our secondary test group took to the sleep quite well. Seeing as time is of the essence, our first foray into human testing will consist of subjects one through ten."

Constantinus Lex looked nervously to his father and grandfather, as his mother and siblings had been denied access to the program. Lack of space was the official concern, but Lex knew it was more out of suspicion of dissent than anything. The oldest man grumbled at the news, but that was his reaction to everything these days. His grandfather was a man of few words, and when spoken they tended to be belittling. His father was little better, but at least he knew how to praise his child's obvious attempt to follow in his footsteps. But, being the good son that he was, Lex had accompanied him and their clan patriarch into the brink of a new era for the Empire.. a decision that he grew to regret almost immediately. Collectively the three wore the numbers sixteen, seventeen, and eighteen in with the lower spots going to the seniors which fortunately meant that the trio would not be amongst the first guinea pigs for the program. Which was for the best considering no one had really heard the "less than ideal" findings from any credible source. There was a particularly persistent rumor about horrible mutations and insanity.

"Secondary testing will commence in three days time at 0700", the elderly lab tech announced to numbers eleven through twenty as the first ten of their subjects were locked into their cryogenic slumber for God knows how long. The official timeframe said anywhere between a dozen years and "indeterminate", which bred more than a little paranoia in the back of Lex's already crowded mind. "The first trial run went as planned, my lords. The new chambers will be finished by tonight, so please gather your personal effects and assemble a will, if applicable. All hail the Empire. All hail Zenebas."

The next few days moved tortuously slow. Lex had little in the way of possessions to stow away and his grandfather was in fine form. He was more vocal than he'd been in years as he tore into anyone that looked at him funny. He'd actually even shouted once. The stress visibly took its toll on the man's son, who looked as if he'd aged a year in the coming days. Within hours of their expected stasis, he had made an important decision. "Son, we can't do this any more."

"What do you mean?" the younger asked desperately.

"Your grandfather and I can't do this. I know we look strong, but damn it, this is suicide and.." For the first time in his life, the elder appeared afraid.

"But.. father, this was an order. I.. we can't run away. We'd be deserters and cowards", Lex was taken aback. His father was vulnerable. He was a person for once and he actually was speaking to his son as an equal.

"Constantinus, I understand your loyalty to Zenebas. I really do. It's your one defining feature, your military career. Hell, it's the one thing that your grandfather and I are proud of you for. But listen to reason. These people don't care about us. To them, you're a test subject. An attempt at making a name for themselves. So, your grandfather and I are going back. Our empire is dead. We lost the war. Maybe there'll be a new place for us soldiers in this new world.

"...Understood." That was the day that Lex finally decided to break from his father's mold. He decided that it was better to work for something of his own than be a trophy for his grandfather. But most of all, he took the idea that there was no place for a man whose life amounted to a So he waved his relatives off as they fled his destiny, as they sought refuge in the arms of their former enemies. An hour later, he crawled into a pod and slowly fell asleep.

Lex never thought that there would be time for dreaming in the afterlife. He always thought that it'd be all clouds and harps.. but full military dress wouldn't really fit in up there, would it? He wondered nervously if he'd have to trade all of his medals in for some kind of bed sheet. But that didn't seem to be an issue. The afterlife, or so he'd christened it, was just one confusing dream sequence after another, ever changing and flowing like a river of subconscious brainwaves. That's all it was, really, or so he had convinced himself. War stories being echoed through his now-empty head. Machine-gun fire was his angelic choir, combat fatigues were his robe. He often wondered aloud in his slumber just what exactly he'd done to anger God so much that he'd condemn him to an eternity of near-constant fear.

But one day, it ended. There was no bright light, no choir of falsetto voices to herald his resurrection from the dead. With a hiss and a crack not unlike a shaken soda bottle, the rolling mist poured from the Zenebean cryo-chamber. Its bewildered inhabitant choked on his tongue and promptly met the outside world via a rudimentary face-to-ground interface. That is to say, he fell. He fell hard. But it would later show that the swift junction of tile and dull wits are exactly what was needed to jump-start the little cognitive abilities that Constantinus Lex still possessed. Whether it was the potent drugs coursing through his system or the millenia of sleeping, but he was sore.. and he was groggy. But mostly he was just confused.

The pristine lab of the Zenebean scientists was no more, replaced with dirt and stone as the years of war had torn it to pieces. Tattered pieces of paper were scattered about and rows upon rows of cryo-tanks had been smashed into little more than debris. Few containers of the past-great families remained intact, but most had been damaged beyond repair and their inhabitants reduced to a fine dust. The ultra high-tech facility of the past was simply a bombed out ruin of the present, a grim shadow of its former self. Crawling through the collapsed ceiling and support structures, he found himself greeted by the searing sun and a wind that carried the promise of a strange new world.
