    Intro:


    The battlefield is an enormous cavern, reaching a height of almost a thousand feet at the ceiling and many times this wide, the cavern is lit poorly by several flood lights and is covered in massive stalactites and stalagmites, in the centre a rusted old judge capsule opens with a clang and a barely functioning Judge sticks his head out.

    ”The surrounding area is a designated Zoids battlefield, this area is now restricted, battle mode 0099, Captain Moira Lacrima of Team Arcadian, vs Namaj Welain, ready….FIGHT!”

    Moira posts first, alternating each round.

    Narrative

    So, here it was - Moira's first fight in the new league. It was immediately far more upscale than what she'd been used to - An entire cave? Amazing. It was almost a shame she didn't have time to admire the scenery, really - despite the damp and the dark, there were some truly wondrous things in the cavern. How many millennia had these stalagmites been forming, that they were almost as large as a Zoid? And now they were going to blow them all to hell. If she was honest, the prospect was more than a little exciting. If nothing else, all that exploding stone was going to look amazing in slow motion.

    She couldn’t say she wasn’t a little worried about her opponent - from what she’d been able to dig up about Gun Blasters in general, long-range was their speciality, whilst she’d need to get the Spino Sapper into melee range to do much significant damage. Nevertheless, Moira had something of a plan formed. Was it a good plan? She couldn't say she'd ever had any of her best ideas just as a battle started, but frankly it was about a million times better than nothing. The Judge went through the usual monologue, and Moira's hand hovered over the controls to her weaponry. 

    "Ready...?" The pilot took a calming breath, "Fight!"

    She accessed the Nanotech coating’s defensive programming with a swipe of a newly-installed touchscreen, setting it to resist solid rounds. Energy-based attacks would still be a problem, but at least she might avoid having too many holes blown in her armor before she got to slice something up with her saws. A beep informed her that the nanobots had done their work. Good, it was time to go; she’d already spent too long in one place. The Sapper lurched into its walk cycle, stomping away from its starting position, and into the shadow of a giant stalagmite whilst Moira studied the radar. Seemed like there was a reasonable amount of cover around, although she doubted any of it would take that much abuse from either Zoid. In other words, she’d need to keep moving - the very slight edge she had over her opponent was manoeuvrability, admittedly at the cost of not being able to afford to lose a limb. It probably wasn't the best plan to dwell on that, though. Instead, she should have her head in the game.

    With a violent jerk, the Spino Sapper leapt from its cover, twin shells erupting from the cannons in its gut as it did. That should be a decent distraction, she figured, grappling with her Zoid to keep it moving. As the Sapper ran, the bobble-heads on her dash nodded aggressively - Moira couldn't help but wonder how long it was going to take until one of their necks snapped and she had a head rolling about in there. Not soon, she hoped - they hadn't exactly been cheap. Ahead, she noticed, the cover of the rock formations gradually sloped down into uselessness, as the cave overhead swooped up and away and the stalactites seemed to have dissolved into the darkness. 

    Moira heaved on the controls, sliding the heavy dinosaur to a stop, kicking up all sorts of cave dust, and almost certainly inflicting whiplash onto her bobble-headed figures. With a squeeze of the trigger, the machine guns on the Sapper's face begin to whirr, and then the characteristic rat-a-tat echoed loudly as they spat a deadly hail towards their target, accompanied by an ugly snarl from the Zoid itself. Moira smiled slightly - The Spino Sapper been surprisingly aggressive since her… Incident at the ruins. Not that she was complaining - if anything, it had to help. With little coaxing from its pilot, the Zoid charged forward, heading not towards its enemy, but towards cover once again - if she could help it, Moira didn't really want to charge the Gun Blaster head-on. She might have plated up her Zoid with everything she could afford, but she still doubted it would survive a full-frontal assault.

    And in any case, Moira already had a plan to get in close. However it needed the Sapper to stay still for a moment so she could aim, and that was just begging for an attack. Indeed, the rock formation she ducked behind would likely only give her a few precious seconds, but that was all that was necessary as she set about configuring the missile system. She hadn't really needed to use it before - it wasn't like they'd had much advantage over the cannons in any of her previous fights, but now, she might actually have a use for them. Overhead lights blared on over Moira’s head, though the veritable canopy of stuff that Moira had decked her cockpit out with over the years. She smiled, yanked back a stiff lever down towards her body, and three slashes of flame clawed across the cavern, spiralling towards the Gun Blaster, and then, if her aim had been good, away and into the cave itself.

    BOOM! The missiles exploded with a fiery vengeance, dissipating rapidly into an acrid smoke. Hopefully they had been forceful enough to have dislodged at least some rock from the cave, or they weren't going to provide much cover at all.

    Moira didn't check what was happening in front of her. She knew she didn't have long, and she'd be faster if she just imagined the worst. With a hurried set of swipes, Moira accessed the Nanotech's defensive settings again, setting them to defend her against melee - she had no doubt that when she got into close range, it wouldn't be the guns she'd need to be worried about.

    With the Nanotech set, it was time to go - the Spino Sapper charged. She was betting everything on the Sapper being just fast enough to slice into the Gun Blaster’s side before she got the horns. Although, hell, even if that did happen, at this point Moira was resolved to just cut them off. The howl of whirring saws and the Zoid's and Pilot's own scream as they burst from the smoke combined to form a battle-hymn that made Moira’s heart beat so hard she was surprised that it was still inside her chest. Illuminated in a vicious blue light, the spinosaurus slashed with its saws. Once! Twice! The arcs of light danced in Moira's eyes. Surely that had to have done some serious damage?

There are two on each side of the neck, five on each side (between the legs), three on each side of the rear, and two on each side of the lower tail for a total of 24 spikes. In addition to being excellent melee weapons, these spikes are also defensive shield generators which provide the Gun Blaster with a high-strength, omni-directional shield.

    "Well, I guess this is one way to earn money when there is no jobs to pick up." Namaj would mumble to himself in the cockpit as he awaited the judge to begin this fight. It was quite boring waiting around when you were used to going in and getting the job done as soon as possible so you could get paid. The place they were in was a massive cavern, stalactites and stalagmites filling the dimly lit arena just enough to provide visibility for movement and weapons fire.
    "Well, there's an idea. I wonder if I can knock those over if I pushed them. They're large enough to block off areas around me if I position myself right."

    It was shortly after he thought out loud to himself that the judge, one covered in rust and seeming to need a good refurbishing, announced that the battle was now started. Judging the distance from his opponent at the word go, Namaj would fire off the middle array of the Gun Blaster's heavy weapons array and send off two different mortar strikes against the Spino Sapper he needed to defeat. His hope was to strike the left leg of the Zoid and damage it enough to take it out of the fight. As long as it was a close miss he would deal enough to cause worry, the splash damage of a mortar was not something you could really ignore. Not only could it damage a Zoid with the explosion, it could also damage the cavern and cause both stalagmites and stalactites to fall down and block off areas or hit the opposing Zoid as well. Not waiting to see if the mortars struck anything, the mercenary for hire would reach down to the panel for the Nanotech Armor and set it to protect against solid rounds for now. It would be a bit before the Zoids would be close enough for melee combat so he would simply ride it out for now and try to minimize the damage he could take from ranged combat.

    Even as the Nanotech Armor systems nanites finished up changing their molecular form, the shield formed by the spikes on the Zoid would be activated at the press of a button to reduce damage by even more. "If you want a piece of this you'll have to chip the paint first. And then the armor can reform itself after." The man seemed to be talking to his opponent, though he had no communications activated so it would only be heard by himself and the Gun Blaster he piloted. With the shield active it was time to start positioning so that he only had to worry about what was in front of him. Some would consider it a dodge, others would consider it retreat. Namaj, however, would call backing up against the wall a tactically sound move that gave him the advantage due to the weapons upon the Gun Blaster. With the tail of the Zoid now touching the wall of the cavern, some would notice that he had backed up between two massive stalagmites. His intentions for them were not clear to those watching, but would be in due time if one were to keep their eyes glued to the screen of the Zoid battle.

    A massive echo would resound through the cavern as the duet of mortar fire sung in the large, open, space. He was mostly using radar to aim his shots, the dim lighting making it difficult to use his eyes for such an action. With luck he would strike the same leg he had aimed for with the prior shot, and if not maybe he would deal some damage with the explosion or damaged terrain. Once the shot was in the air the Gun Blaster would suddenly slam its tail and body against the stalagmite to the left of it. The massive pillar would fall down with a tooth-rattling crash that made even the Gun Blaster shake and nearly lose footing as he prepared to fire off another shot.

    The radar gave him a general idea, which seemed to be getting closer if he was thinking properly, and he would fire off another attack of the same kind at what was supposed to be the right leg of the Spino Sapper before he reached down to his Nanotech settings again. The Spino Sapper he was trying to defeat was dangerous if it got into close range, those buzz saws were no joke, and thus he needed to protect himself from being chewed into metal shards once it came down to melee combat. "They're beam saws, right? I hope I'm remembering correctly...it would suck to lose because I forgot something so simple." The man would change his armor to protect against energy based weapons before going into the final plans of his makeshift fort.

    The Gun Blaster would repeat the ramming technique he had done earlier, this time to the stalagmite to his right, to cause another eruption of noise that nearly caused his Zoid to tip over; the stalagmites to either side of him keeping him upright and now boxed in. Now that there was only one way to get to him, directly in front of him, the man simply waited until he saw movement before him to let loose a salvo of cannon fire that would shred the strongest of armors on the planet Zi. Once, twice, thrice, four times! The high array's twin one hundred and twenty-millimeter cannons would erupt into a flurry of weapons fire at the right leg of the Zoid he believed he was seeing. "Man, this would be so much easier if it was in broad daylight and they let me shoot at the stupid head of the thing. Pilot dead, console fried, no more fight to deal with! That would be the easy paycheck!" Hopefully this fight would not take too long, he wanted to try and find more work, or maybe find someone on a job already and get added to it. He needed money, lots of it, for what he had planned.

    The battle began not so much with a bang but more of a cacophonous explosion as the Gunblaster unloaded its middle array of Mortars at the opposing Spinosapper, the larger of the two hitting dead on target while only shrapnel from the smaller struck the Spinosapper’s leg. (72DP to Left leg, 98 armour remaining) Thankfully Moira had activated her Nanotech’s reduction early and managed to weather the brunt of the attack and suffer drastically reduced damage.

    Not backing down the Arcadian pilot fired back, the slow moving Gunblaster unable to avoid the punishing fire of the 50mm cannons (30DP to body, 260 armour remaining.) As his opponent before him Namaj had activated the abilities of his nanotech armour to reduce the impact of incoming fire.

    The Freelancer’s mortars sung again and the explosive blasts shattered against the leg of the Spinosapper (72DP to left leg, 26 armour remaining) just as the Arcadian answered with her own machine guns (24DP to body, 236 armour left).

    As both Zoids opened up with more explosive fire, the two salvos met in the air and exploded, showering the opponents with rocks and debris but causing no actual damage to the pair, as the Gunblaster bunkered down, the Spinosapper charged. The Gunblaster’s twin cannons exploded in a hail of fire, two of which scored direct hits on the Spinosapper’s right leg (85DP*2 170DP, Right leg out of action.) even hampered by the damaged leg the Spino’s saws came crashing down on the Gunblaster’s back to devastating effect (36DP to body, 200 armour remaining.) The timely change of the Nanotech armour and the omni-directional shield took the true sting out of the attack however as the Zoids moved away to re-evaluate their strategies.

    Namaj:
    Nice strategy, going for the legs is a much softer target than the body of the Spino, especially with all that armour, and well done on the armour adjustments, it really save you in that last action, had you not switched out this battle would have been over.

    Moira:
    You’re doing well, and even without the leg you’re still in this, another round to go and those saws are devastating. Just for future, in your next post can you up the font size, was just a little hard to read.

    So in closing, Moira has lost a leg and will be at half agility and speed next round, and Namaj has 200 armour remaining on his body section. Round two begins with Namaj going first.

    "All right Gun Blaster. How about we get this show over with once and for all." The battle had gone well if one were to base it off of the systems he could see inside the cockpit. His armor had not taken too much damage and a good chunk of that damage was already taken care of by the regenerating nanites that composed the later of nanotech regenerative coating applied to the Gun Blaster. "Man, I need to get a hex shield for this bad boy, and maybe get that protective coating applied as well! Pretty sure they said it would work with the nanotech coating I bought!" This Gun Blaster was a lot better than most Zoids he had piloted, and the only way to get him to want something else at this point was for him to find a giant flying Zoid to steal. The sounds of battle will echo across the cavern as Namaj let loose a salvo of energy and standard projectiles with the lower array of the weapons at his disposal. The beam rifles and cannons of the heavy Zoid would be aimed for where the left leg of Moira's Zoid should have been. Would they hit? Only those watching would know! The man inside of the great beast was more focused on taking a step forward and to the left to try and avoid any attacks that may have been coming his way.

    Keeping himself on target as best he could, another round of the same weapon would erupt into the air for the same target. All he needed to do was crash the two-legged Zoid into the ground and this battle was over. With the lower array generally being the more accurate all he had to do was keep the Zoid pointed in the right direction and he would, hopefully, manage to strike a killing blow and get his prize so that he could go back to the work he was used to doing. Two steps to his right would hopefully allow him to avoid any attacks from the Spino Sapper before he let loose another salvo from the lower array's cannons and beam rifles. It was good weaponry if you asked the man. It didn't overheat, it had plenty of ammunition for every weapon in storage, and its reload times were non-existent. Making sure to keep the weapons array aimed in the proper direction, as per the radar that he hoped was still functioning properly, the man would move the Zoid back and to the right for two steps. The Zoid was slow, too slow for fancy movement right now, and he had to make cumbersome and odd movements if he wished to avoid anything that did not automatically track its target. Now THOSE were dangerous for him now. He had no way of dodging them, and it brought up the idea of an anti-missile system to be installed. Maybe even two of them if he could manage to find the space to put them and still add more weaponry as well.

    The noise of the lower array was surely getting on the nerves of those watching the battle right now. The same noise would happen a fourth time, the same weapons being chosen again. He preferred cannons over all others and the beam rifles allowed him to mix up the damage to force his opponent to focus on one type with any nanotech coatings they may have. As the shots flew the Zoid based off of an Ankylosaurus would move forward and to the left for two steps as he turned to continue facing where his opponent should be.

    "Should I change up the attacks? Or do I keep my accuracy as high as possible so I can get this over with as soon as possible?" The question was really 'do I want to make it look fun or just end it the quickest way possible?' Not wanting to really partake in the festive part and make a good show, the man would let loose with a fifth salvo of the same choice of weapons as before. He could almost hear the booing that the people at their homes were making. Namaj Welain did not care about them. They were just plebians left to their own devices and watching a large gambling match. He hoped they placed their money on him, cause those watching that bet on him were likely cheering as he moved directly backward a few steps to get out of the way of attacks coming at him, or a falling Zoid if he had managed to take it out at close range. If no one had bet on him now, and he won, they would most assuredly bet on him in the future. Hell, he could probably get a few people to help him set up a gambling ring so they could take cuts from those gambling in his battles; bets for or against him.

    Narrative

    Ugh, this hadn’t quite gone like she’d planned - apparently her research hadn’t been in-depth enough to tell her that the Gunblaster had a shield. And worse, the computer’s readout on the status of the leg that her opponent was simply “Unavailable”. Given the way the Spino was moving, that seemed an appropriate descriptor. Still, the important thing was that she was moving. As long as she was moving, she was still in the fight. And she’d be damned if she was gonna go out with a whimper instead of a roar.

    She lunged for the relative safety of what cover was left after the firefight, making certain that she didn’t stay in front of the Ankylosaur’s guns - seemed like it couldn’t move the weapons without moving itself, so naturally she wanted to keep it re-adjusting itself as much as she could. Whilst the Sapper ran, using one of the beam saws as a crutch, Moira prepped the missiles, flipping switches until her cockpit was illuminated in light. The Zoid turned, and three missiles roared out into the cave, and hopefully into her opponent. There would be no distractions now - now, Moira meant business. 

    And the first order of that business? Finding somewhere quiet to sort out the Nanotech. The Spinosaurus hobbled into one of the less destroyed areas of the cave. She figured it wouldn’t stay that way for too long, but she’d be out of there soon enough. Slamming her hands into the touchscreen, Moira listened to the sounds of gunfire echoing through the cavern, and set the Nanotech to defend her against the bullets and shells that were no doubt coming her way. With her leg in the state it was, she didn’t see much point in getting back into Melee range again to use the saws. Besides, she wasn’t keen to get up close, only to discover that she couldn’t deal any meaningful damage. Well, not before she'd thoroughly tenderised the armor with a nice helping of ammunition.  

    The Spino Sapper launched itself out cover - Moira didn’t fancy finding out if her foe had spent the time she’d used to recalibrate her defences to charge up some crazy weapon. She’d seen those things before, and they were devastating. Indeed, she figured she’d be a happy woman if she never saw something like that ever again, let alone come face to face with one. On the bright side, she supposed, her opponent was no theropod: those sorts of Zoids seemed the most likely candidates for that kind of firepower, for whatever reason. Frankly Moira figured that something so powerful would be better off on something more stable - something with more legs, but she supposed that the designers probably had their reasons. In any case, it was hardly a thing to be worrying about in the middle of her battle - her particular theropod wasn’t lucky enough to have some insane cannon it it, so she’d have to keep it alive by making sure the thing shooting at them stopped.

    On that front, Moira broke for the next area of cover, and as the Sapper hobbled along, the tail guns lined up with their targets, and lit up the cavern with a searing flash of energy pellets leaving their barrels. It was perhaps not as enthusiastic a shot as the one she had started with, but frankly she was amazed the Sapper was still upright with the beating its leg had taken, and she didn’t want to risk it buckling under the Zoid’s weight more than she had to. Still, she kept running as quickly as she could get her Zoid to go - the armor plating was thick, but looking at the array of weaponry sat on top of her opponent’s zoid, she didn’t doubt that they were capable of chewing through it eventually.  The lights above Moira’s head flicked on again, and with the mash of a button, three missiles followed the path of the energy rounds. 

    Moira pushed the crippled Zoid onwards - if she could just stay at the sides of the Gunblaster, she figured it’d make her an awkward target, but since her opponent kept moving, she needed to, too. Not ideal, especially since the missiles and cannons were pretty hard to aim whilst moving, and there was also the matter of the totalled leg, but it was that or being left with a desiccated Spinosaurus. Glancing at her opponent, she figured she had the time to stop again, sliding the heavy Zoid to a halt in the gloom, back facing her opponent. Not a conventional approach, perhaps, but given her stronger guns happened to be mounted on her Zoid’s tail, there wasn’t a lot she could do. With a loud crack, the rounds followed the path of the missiles, towards her opponent.

    The pilots re-engaged with a bang, missiles flew and beam cannons roared in a cacophony of concussive blasts, two of the Spino’s missiles found their targets in the body of the Gunblaster (40 DP to body, 190 Remaining.) The blasts managed to knock the Gunblaster off balance that one of the beam cannons shots missed but unfortunately the other found its mark and the remaining leg of the Spino was obliterated, the bi pedal Zoid hit the ground in a system freeze.

    You made the right choice in attacking the legs, there was just too much armour on the Spino’s body to make it a viable target. Well fought, I look forward to seeing more of your battles.
